“Beautiful Creatures” by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is a story about Ethan Wate, a boy with cabin fever in a small town, and Lena Duchannes a new girl with a powerful secret. In the small Southern town of Gatlin there are more secrets than the small town can keep hidden. Ethan and Lena must figure out how to balance the secrets of the past and the history that connects them both.
Ethan is a strong character who at some points feels unrealistic. Aside from a bit more attention to detail than most teenage boys have, he was interesting to watch. My only issue is that he seems to be the “perfect boyfriend.” Lena on the other hand is both the perfect girl and the imperfect girl. As she struggles with her identity, Ethan is fighting to find out where he fits into this world.
Beautiful Creatures is a refreshing take on the small southern town, star-crossed lovers, and the secret witch tropes. It mixes a fast paced magical story with a strong love story. The writing is captivating and keeps the reader turning each page. I cannot suggest this book more. If you have not already, you need to read this book.
